Google AI Plus for Students: US Gets AI Pro Free Instead [2026]

If you searched for Google AI Plus for students, you probably expected a free plan with 400 GB of storage and a $4.99 price tag after the trial. That deal exists, but not for you. Google excluded the United States from the AI Plus student offer and gave US students a bigger plan instead: one free year of Google AI Pro.

The confusion is easy to explain. Google announced two student deals on August 19, 2026, and both carry the same deadline. Students in more than 140 other markets get AI Plus. Students in the US get AI Pro instead, a plan Google values at $19.99 a month.

This guide explains what the US plan includes, who qualifies, how to claim it in a few minutes, and the one step that keeps a surprise charge off your card. [Editorial note: Google changes student terms often. Details below follow Google’s August 19 announcement and its help page, checked on October 2, 2026.]

Google AI Plus vs Google AI Pro: Which Student Deal Do You Get?

The two plans sit at different levels, and your country decides which one you can claim. Here is the split:

✅ United States: one year of Google AI Pro, free. The price after the trial is $19.99 a month.

🌍 More than 140 other markets: one year of Google AI Plus, free. The price after the trial is $4.99 a month, or the local equivalent.

❌ Not included in the AI Plus offer: the US, Canada, Albania, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Macau and Tunisia.

If you are in the US, ignore any guide that tells you to hunt for the AI Plus student deal. Go straight to the Pro offer. This guide focuses on the plan comparison and the claim steps.

What the Free Google AI Pro Student Plan Includes

Google lists these benefits for US students:

  • 📊 4x higher usage limits in Gemini than the free plan
  • 💾 5 TB of storage across Google Photos, Drive and Gmail
  • 🤖 Gemini in Gmail and Google Docs, so you can draft and summarize inside the apps you already use
  • ⚡ Access to Gemini Spark, Google’s background agent [rollout is staged, so check your own app]
  • 🩺 Google Health Premium, listed by Google as part of the plan

Google’s plan page adds more for Pro subscribers in general, including 1,000 Flow credits for video, Jules and Antigravity for coding, and Chrome auto browse. Treat those as plan features that can roll out at different times rather than guaranteed day-one perks.

The study tools matter most for coursework. Google is adding a student hub to the Gemini app with study notebooks that quiz you to find gaps, flashcards, practice quizzes, interactive 3D visualizations and automatic calendar entries built from a syllabus. Google said these features roll out over the coming weeks to users who meet the age requirements.

Who Qualifies for the Google AI Pro Student Offer

Google asks for four things:

  1. You are 18 or older and a college student at an eligible institution.
  2. You use a personal Google Account, not a school or work account.
  3. You pass SheerID verification, which usually checks your school email or enrollment records.
  4. You add a valid payment method at sign-up.

If you already redeemed the Pro student trial earlier, Google’s help page says you keep your benefits and can verify again through SheerID to get 12 more months of the student discount. Confirm that screen on your own account, because renewals depend on your status.

The payment method is the catch. Google bills $19.99 a month automatically when the free year ends unless you cancel first.

How to Claim Your Free Year in 5 Steps

  1. Open the student page at one.google.com/ai-student while signed in to your personal Google Account.
  2. Start the offer and follow the SheerID prompts to verify your enrollment.
  3. Add a payment method when Google asks.
  4. Confirm the plan and check that the trial end date appears on your subscription page.
  5. Set two calendar reminders now: one 30 days before the trial ends and one 3 days before.

⏱️ The whole process takes about five minutes if your school email is already linked to SheerID. Redeem before December 31, 2026, because Google closes the offer after that date.

What Happens After the 12 Months

On the last day of the trial, Google AI Pro converts to $19.99 a month. You can cancel any time, so switch it off before that date if you do not want to keep paying. Read the confirmation screen when you cancel, because it states what happens to your benefits.

Your storage matters here. If you moved files into 5 TB of space and drop back to the free 15 GB, you will need to trim your library or pay for storage. Check your Drive and Photos usage a month before the deadline.

Is There a Cheaper Bundle for Students?

Yes. Google also offers Google AI Pro bundled with YouTube Premium. MacRumors reported a price of $8.99 a month in the US, a 70 percent discount, and a student can keep the bundle for up to four years. Google requires SheerID verification, and school-issued accounts do not qualify for the YouTube Premium part. Students who want a non-Google option should read Perplexity for students.

Compare that bundle to the free year before you choose. The free year costs nothing for 12 months, but it renews at $19.99. The bundle costs money from day one but stays low for longer.

Should You Claim It?

Claim it if you use Gemini for papers, study guides or coding, or if you fill your Drive and Photos. The free year removes the main cost, and 5 TB of storage alone is worth far more than the free tier’s 15 GB.

Skip it only if you will forget to cancel and cannot absorb a $19.99 charge. In that case, stick with the free Gemini plan, which still includes Deep Research, Gemini Live and Gemini Notebook. FAQ

Is Google AI Plus free for students in the US?

No. Google excluded the US from the AI Plus student offer. US students can claim one free year of Google AI Pro instead, which includes 5 TB of storage and 4x Gemini usage limits. The student plan renews at $19.99 a month unless you cancel before the trial ends.

How long does the Google AI Pro student offer last?

The free period lasts 12 months from the day you redeem it. You must redeem before December 31, 2026. After that date, Google no longer accepts new sign-ups under this offer, although students who already redeemed keep their benefits until the trial ends.

Do I need a credit card for the student plan?

Yes. Google asks for a valid payment method at sign-up, even though you pay nothing during the trial. When the 12 months end, Google charges $19.99 a month automatically. Set a reminder before the end date so you can cancel in time.

Can I use my school email account?

Use a personal Google Account for the subscription. Google does not accept school-issued accounts for this plan. You can still verify your student status with your school email through SheerID, but the subscription must live in your personal account.

Claim It Before the Year Ends

The US student deal is better than the AI Plus offer people search for, but only if you claim it and plan the exit. Go to one.google.com/ai-student, finish the SheerID check, and set your cancel reminder the same day. Tell us in the comments which Gemini study feature you plan to try first.
