Microsoft just launched the most expensive Surface laptop in years, and it is built for people who run AI models on their own machines. The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599 in the US, runs on NVIDIA’s new RTX Spark chip, and is open for pre-order now.

Microsoft says it is much faster than Apple’s MacBook Pro for local AI work. Those are Microsoft’s numbers, and no independent review exists yet. [Editorial note: this is a pre-release breakdown, not a review, and we’ll update it when testers get final units.]

Below you’ll find the specs, what Microsoft claims, what early hands-on impressions say, the matching $5,999 Dev Box, and who should buy now or wait.

What Is the Surface Laptop Ultra?

According to Engadget’s spec rundown, the Surface Laptop Ultra is based on NVIDIA’s RTX Spark chip, sold as the RTX Spark N1X. Microsoft calls it a “builder class PC,” aimed at developers and power users rather than casual buyers.

Pre-orders opened October 7, 2026. The key hardware, per Engadget and Microsoft’s product page:

  • 🧠 Chip: NVIDIA RTX Spark with Blackwell RTX graphics and up to a 20-core NVIDIA Grace CPU.
  • 💾 Memory: up to 128GB of unified memory shared by the CPU and GPU.
  • 📦 Storage: up to 2TB, and user-upgradable.
  • 🖥️ Display: 15-inch mini-LED touchscreen at 120 Hz with up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness.
  • ⚖️ Build: aluminum, under 4.5 pounds and under 18 mm thick, in Platinum and Nightfall.

The 15-inch size comes from Microsoft. Engadget’s hands-on describes a 16-inch laptop, which looks like an error, so trust Microsoft’s spec sheet.

How Much Does the Surface Laptop Ultra Cost in the US?

Pricing starts at $2,599 (Microsoft’s store lists $2,599.99). Prices climb with memory, but the sources I opened do not agree on the base RAM or on the price of the top configuration, so check the configurator before you order.

Microsoft’s page does not state whether a charger is included in the box. Microsoft’s page also lists no ship date for the laptop, so don’t plan around a specific delivery day.

How Fast Is It? Microsoft’s Claims vs Reality

Microsoft compared the Surface Laptop Ultra with a MacBook Pro using the M5 Pro chip. According to Engadget, Microsoft claims:

⚡ Task📈 Claimed advantage
🎬 Video generation6.2x faster
🖼️ Image creation4.3x faster
💬 Time to first token2.1x faster

Microsoft also says the chip delivers up to one petaflop of FP4 AI compute and keeps 99% of its peak performance on battery, and that cooling has 2.5 times the thermal capacity of its previous notebooks. On its product page, Microsoft says the machine supports CUDA and local AI models up to 120 billion parameters.

These are vendor claims on selected tasks. They are not the same as independent benchmarks.

What Do Early Hands-On Impressions Say?

Devindra Hardawar’s hands-on at Engadget is positive on build quality. He calls the keyboard tactile, the haptic touchpad large and responsive, and the screen “surprisingly bright.” He writes that it “feels better than any other Windows laptop I’ve held before.”

On performance, his one test was a game: Gears of War: E-Day ran smoothly at slightly above 1080p, both plugged in and on battery. He had not yet seen it run heavy AI workloads.

He also adds a caution. He calls it “just a premium laptop” and notes that RTX Spark’s benefits are “meant for developers and power users,” unlike Apple Silicon, which helped everyday Mac buyers right away.

That is a useful reality check for the price.

What Is the $5,999 Surface RTX Spark Dev Box?

Microsoft also opened pre-orders for a desktop version. Per Engadget, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box costs about $6,000 and ships in November.

  • 🧠 Memory and storage: 128GB of unified memory and 2TB of removable storage.
  • 🪟 Software: Windows 11 Pro with Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub CLI, GitHub Copilot and Python preinstalled.
  • 🤖 Claim: it can run AI models “exceeding 120B parameters.”
  • 🔌 Ports: two USB-C, one USB-A, Ethernet, DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1b.

Engadget describes it as a larger, pricier take on NVIDIA’s DGX Spark, and expects the price to be a major obstacle for anyone but enterprises. For desktop AI builds on a normal budget, see our guide to the best gaming PCs for AI and gaming.

Who Should Buy the Surface Laptop Ultra?

👤 You are…🎯 Verdict
🧑‍💻 A developer running large local AI models✅ Worth a serious look, after independent benchmarks
🎮 A gamer who wants a portable RTX machine⏱️ Wait for real battery and thermal tests
🏢 A student or casual user❌ Too expensive for what you’d use
🍎 A MacBook Pro owner who is happy❌ No reason to switch yet

Developers who live in tools like Cursor or the Claude Code CLI mostly use cloud models today. This laptop is a bet that more of that work moves onto your own hardware.

What Should You Do Before Pre-Ordering?

You have time. Pre-orders are open, but nothing has shipped.

  • ✅ Wait for independent reviews. Battery life, noise and sustained speed aren’t published yet.
  • ✅ Compare configurations. Memory drives the price, so decide how large a model you really need.
  • ✅ Use the trade-in offer if you qualify. Microsoft’s offer runs through November 23.
  • ✅ Check driver support. Any new GPU platform can have teething problems, so see our guide on fixing NVIDIA driver crashes.
  • ❌ Don’t order from unofficial listings. Use Microsoft or a major US retailer.
  • ❌ Don’t buy on the speed charts alone. They are Microsoft’s, not a third party’s.

FAQ

How much does the Surface Laptop Ultra cost?

The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599 in the US, and Microsoft’s store lists $2,599.99. Pre-orders opened October 7, 2026. Prices rise with memory, up to 128GB, and the sources I checked disagree on the base RAM and top-tier price, so confirm in Microsoft’s configurator before ordering.

What chip does the Surface Laptop Ultra use?

It uses NVIDIA’s RTX Spark platform, sold as the RTX Spark N1X, which combines Blackwell RTX graphics with up to a 20-core NVIDIA Grace CPU and up to 128GB of unified memory. Microsoft says it supports CUDA and local AI models up to 120 billion parameters.

Is the Surface Laptop Ultra faster than a MacBook Pro?

Microsoft says so for specific AI tasks, claiming 6.2x faster video generation, 4.3x faster image creation and 2.1x faster time to first token versus a MacBook Pro with M5 Pro. These are Microsoft’s own figures, and no independent testing has confirmed them yet.

When does the Surface Laptop Ultra ship?

Early signs are promising but thin. Engadget’s reviewer ran Gears of War: E-Day smoothly at slightly above 1080p, plugged in and on battery. Microsoft lists ray tracing, DLSS and Reflex on its 120 Hz display. Wait for full benchmarks before you rely on it for games.

The Bottom Line

The Surface Laptop Ultra is a $2,599 bet on local AI: a lighter 15-inch laptop with NVIDIA’s RTX Spark chip, up to 128GB of memory, and a speed pitch aimed squarely at the MacBook Pro. The numbers come from Microsoft, and the one hands-on says it’s a very good laptop for developers and power users.

If that describes you, pre-order only if the refund policy suits you, and wait for independent battery and speed tests first. We’ll update this page when reviews land and Microsoft publishes a ship date.
